3 Tips You Can Use to Get Healthier Kids

I know it’s been awhile since I posted, I have let a lot of things get in the way and to be honest I think I needed a bit of a break so I practiced self care and didn’t post for a bit. Tonight I want to share a few tips with you about how to help your children get healthier. I see far too many kids out there that are overweight and plain unhealthy. Trust me when I say that I know about being that kid, as you can see in the picture most of my life was spent being overweight and inactive.  But rather than preach to you the things you might be doing wrong I want to share 3 tips about things that will help.

  1. Practice saying no–  Treats are okay, the occasional ice cream, candy bar, or sugary drink is not all bad.  We should have some treats in life, but it isn’t necessary or a good habit to get in to have a candy bar every time you go to the store, ice cream every night after dinner, etc.  Teaching kids the difference between the occasional indulgence and an everyday expectation is important.  They are kids so they don’t understand or have a lot of self control, it’s up to the people around them to help them practice.
  2. Unplug and get active as a family affair– If you try and get your children to be active, yet you are online or binge watching your TV shows when trying to shove them out the door, you just might have some difficulty.  Make a new habit of unplugged weekends and some weeknights.  Go for walks, hang out at the park, go hiking, go camping, and ride bikes.  Not only will it help them establish a healthy lifestyle now, but will help them connect with you versus who knows who on their live gaming systems.  Be the example you want to be and have fun together on a regular basis with active family dates.
  3. Eat a variety of foods– Back to tip 1, it’s not always good to eat the same kid friendly foods all of the time.  Hamburgers, hotdogs, fried chicken, chicken nuggets, and ramen noodles do not make a balanced diet.  Introducing new foods and meals will help expand their pallet and you can slip a huge colorful arrangement of fruits and vegetables in as well.  Using meal times to help your kids get a more balanced diet will again help set them up for some great habits in the future.

These are just a few tips that you can use to help incorporate a healthier lifestyle for your children.  Do you have any tips to share with other parents or caregivers?

    Wonderful tips! I too was a chunky kid (and grown-up, well into my 20’s) and wish my parents had this kind of advice at their finger tips. But alas, the 1970’s celebrated TV dinners and mass TV watching, so sedentary was the name of the game. The only thing I’d add to your list is for parents to be good role models. If you deny kids an extra cookie and then scarf down three more in front of them, that is a big disconnect.

    These are great tips — something I’m working on is coming up with rewards that don’t involve food. That’s a habit I fall into far too often, and it’s really not a healthy way to reward yourself. We are not dogs, after all, we don’t always need a “treat” for good behavior! I am focusing more on trying to reward with experiences, even simple things that my son enjoys, like going somewhere with me without the baby along!

    These are really great tips Jenn! The subject of candy and kids just gets my rankles up, as I’m sure you know :D. I see moms giving their kids food to soothe emotions and that’s a crazy-making setup for weight gain. Ugh!

    Great tips! I like to get active with my five year old, it’s fun and it also teacher her how to be healthy.
